Andy Schmidt Obituary, RUSSELL COUNTY, Ky. — Andy Schmidt, 42, of Lexington, Kentucky, has lost her life following a stated drowning at Lake Cumberland, based on to Russell County Coroner Mark Coots.
Schmidt was identified as the victim after law enforcement responded to a report of a possible drowning in the eastern portion of Russell County near Lake Cumberland Marina, formerly known as Alligator Dock No. 1.
According to Coroner Coots, Schmidt had been camping with friends at Wolf Creek Landing, located across the lake from Lake Cumberland Marina. Schmidt and a friend were reportedly swimming when Schmidt commenced experiencing difficulty in the water.
Witnesses reported that Schmidt struggled in the water before going beneath the surface and failing to resurface. A search and recovery operation was subsequently launched in the area as agencies worked to locate him.
Recovery efforts resumed Sunday morning, with members of Russell County Search & Rescue and officers with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife participating in the operation. At approximately 9:40 a.m., officials confirmed that a body had been recovered from the waters of Lake Cumberland near the marina.
The Russell County Coroner responded to the scene following the recovery. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding Schmidt’s drowning, and the occurrence remains under inquiry.
The occurrence serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with swimming in open water, where conditions can change rapidly. Additional information may be released as authorities proceed their probe.
